I found this chart in a World Health Organization report on the State of Impaired Driving around the world and guess what I discovered….We’re Number One. Are we number one for education, laws, enforcement, punishment, avoidance? No. WE’RE NUMBER ONE FOR THE PERCENTAGE OF FATAL CRASHES INVOLVING IMPAIRED DRIVERS. Wow. I don’t know about you but I am so proud to be a Canadian right now.
The other thing that this tells me is that the rest of the world can manage to do the same math that our own governments can’t manage to do. I’d like to say that at least now I feel justified with what I have been saying but I really wish that, just once, I could manage to find something other than our own government statistics that says our rates are dropping and that we have a handle on this, that we are managing to make this number go in the right direction.
I have also heard multiple times, “At least we’re not like the U.S.”. No, we’re not. They are better than us for this. They are number 3 and they are actually getting their levels to drop, where ours are going up. This graph very clearly shows what I have been trying to tell people all along. That is what the opposition to any plan that has been brought up. We are moving towards an American system. My response….”We should be so lucky. At least they are doing something about the problem.” Do I think that they have the best approach?…No. Do I think that they have a better approach?…I think that the numbers speak for themselves on that.
I know that this is a little hard to read. I’m sorry for that but want to thank my “tech crew” (you know who you are) for even managing to get this for me. I have been trying for 2 week.
